Question 1

How often should sacrificial anode rods be replaced to prevent internal cylinder corrosion?

Accepted Answer

A sacrificial magnesium or aluminum anode rod corrodes intentionally to protect the exposed steel tank shell from galvanic decay. In regions with moderate to hard water, anode rods degrade within 3 to 5 years. Inspecting and replacing the rod periodically can double or triple the operational lifespan of your storage heater.

Question 2

What immediate steps should a homeowner take if a storage vessel bursts or leaks from the base?

Accepted Answer

First, locate and close the cold-water inlet shut-off valve located directly above the heater or at your main home shutoff. Next, cut power at the breaker panel for electric units, or rotate the gas control knob to the 'OFF' position on gas units. Finally, call Water Heater Installation Pro at 877-818-0279 for rapid emergency extraction and replacement.

Question 3

Why are dielectric unions or brass transitions essential on copper water connections?

Accepted Answer

Connecting copper domestic water distribution pipes directly to steel tank nipples creates a galvanic battery, causing rapid localized electrolysis and premature joint failure. We install heavy-duty dielectric unions or approved brass isolation adapters to physically insulate dissimilar metals and prevent joint pinhole leaks.

Question 4

Why is a thermal expansion tank required on closed plumbing systems in Louisiana?

Accepted Answer

When municipal water utilities install backflow prevention check valves or pressure-reducing valves at the property water meter, the plumbing system becomes a closed hydraulic loop. As water heats from 50°F to 120°F inside your vessel, it expands by roughly two percent. Without a calibrated bladder expansion tank to absorb this volumetric swell, hydraulic spikes stress pipe solder, cause TPR valves to weep, and fracture the glass inner lining of your tank.

Question 5

How do your mechanics calculate First Hour Rating (FHR) versus storage capacity?

Accepted Answer

First Hour Rating (FHR) measures the total volume of usable hot water a heater delivers during a peak morning hour, taking into account both usable tank storage and heating recovery speed. We size units based on simultaneous household fixture flow—such as multiple showers, laundry, and kitchen use—rather than relying on arbitrary bedroom counts.

Question 6

What are the mechanical venting differences between atmospheric and power-vented units?

Accepted Answer

Atmospheric water heaters rely on natural thermal buoyancy to send combustion exhaust upward through a vertical metal B-vent chimney. Power-vent models utilize an integrated electric draft-inducer fan that expels exhaust gases horizontally through side-wall Schedule 40 PVC or polypro flues, making them ideal for homes without an intact vertical chimney stack.
